Heather Elizabeth Short – God Restores Broken Hearts

Hey everyone! I’m Heather. I am 32 years old and I live in a small town in Virginia nestled in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. My husband and I have three children. I work as the Family Engagement Coordinator at a local elementary school and he’s the Associate Pastor/Worship Leader at our church. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my kiddos, reading, doodling, and bible journaling! I also love indulging in chocolate and sweet tea any time of day.

If I’m being honest with you I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body growing up. I never was interested in art or painting or even doodling. However, in 2013 I went through one of the toughest, gut-wrenching seasons of my life when I became a single mom to my two daughters.

I was blind-sided, heartbroken, and the only place I knew to turn to was the Word to keep me going. One day as I was on Pinterest looking up inspirational verses I stumbled upon Bible Journaling pages. I was immediately drawn to it! I went straight to work ordering a bible, water colors (which I had NEVER used in my entire life), pens, and lots of other goodies that I honestly didn’t even know what to do with. Yet I started diving into the word daily. Through Bible Journaling God began to heal and restore my broken heart, and highlighted all the promises He had made to me in His word. Through the pain and brokenness I found peace, strength, and healing. Bible Journaling not only helps you remember the word, but it brings you to a deeper connection with God!

I am currently in my third bible. My husband and kids will often join me at the table to paint and I am amazed to look and see all the beauty God made from the ashes of a broken life. He blessed me with a wonderful, Godly husband and a new blended family that was better than my wildest dreams could imagine.

Maybe you are on the fence about getting started with Bible Journaling. Don’t hesitate! It has been life changing for my heart and soul. But, I will say that a simple pen and bible is a great way to start. No need to order “all the things” like I did. Let God speak to you through prayer/study and let the pen/paint flow. If you already journal, keep it up! Maybe we can connect sometime soon. Just remember it doesn’t matter what your pages look like or if they are Pinterest worthy. What matters is the transformative work God can do through the process.

I would love to get to know you and follow along in your journey, as well!  If you want to follow me check me out on Instagram @heathereshort for lots of bible pics, doodles, and of course pictures of my family. Hope to connect with you soon!
